One of my favorite places in New York City is the Bat House (or "World of Darkness") at the Bronx Zoo. As a kid, I would stand against the glass cage, fascinated by the snuggling, wriggling clusters of upside-down bats. Years later, on a hiking trip in Panama, I stood in a dark cave while Vampire bats blew past me by the thousands. Even though there was no glass to protect me, I wasn't scared. Over the years I've come to regard the bat as my totem animal. Bats have appeared to me in dreams and in person during difficult transition periods and at joyful times in my life. Plus, their echolocation reminds me of how much I rely on my own intuition. When I got a hold of a perfectly preserved bat skull, I knew that I would use it to make a talismanic necklace for myself. Check out the perfectly articulated rows of teeth on this bottom jaw. Much like our Pelvis Necklaces, this pendant looks like an abstract shape when it's hanging on your neck, but get a little closer and you can see that it was once part of a mammal's anatomy. Two tiny fangs sprout from the front of the jaw, which measures just over 1/2" long and just under 1/2" wide. The chain measures 18". About)).
