Creating a wardrobe of reliable staples isn't easy, but Free People's collection of tops is a good place to start. Crafted from materials such as silk, cotton-jersey and breathable linen, the brand’s range has expanded to include blouses, shirts, T-shirts, long-sleeve and short-sleeve tops.

Demonstrating Free People's signature style, each piece is feminine yet modern; expect floral prints, romantic ruffles and lace trims. Wear yours casually with jeans and trainers, layered underneath tailoring or tucked in with a skirt.

As cotton lacks natural anti-bacterial and odor-resistant properties, it requires more frequent washing. As cotton is prone to shrinkage, it’s best to clean in water that is 30°C or below. Colored cotton garments should be turned inside out before washing. Allow to air dry naturally, and give garments a gentle stretch to restore shapes as soon as they come out of the wash.

A natural alternative to synthetic materials, linen will keep you cool during spells of hot weather. It can usually be washed by hand or in the washing machine, and will actually benefit by regular laundering as it becomes softer over time. Use lukewarm or cold water, alongside a mild soap or non-biological detergent, in order to prevent colour fade. Avoid using bleach on linen, as this can damage the fibres. Lay linen garments flat to dry. Store your linen garments in a cool, dry place, and avoid wrapping them in plastic.

Silk has long been associated with luxury, and while it is a delicate fabric, taking care of it doesn’t need to be difficult. Due to its very delicate nature, we advise carefully following the care instructions on each individual silk product. If your silk is not dry clean only, then it can be hand washed in lukewarm water with a delicate detergent. If your silk is suitable for hand washing, use lukewarm water and a specific, mild detergent to help protect the silk’s natural properties. Turn the item inside out, and soak for up to 30 minutes, then rinse with cool water to remove any remaining soap. Avoid putting in the tumble dryer and instead lay flat to dry naturally. If the care label advises machine washing, then ensure a gentle, cold-water cycle is chosen. If the care label on your silk item says that it can be ironed, then use a low iron setting and ideally iron while it is still slightly damp.
