Headed up by the inimitable Rei Kawakubo, Japanese design label Comme des Garçons (French for 'like boys') was founded in Japan in 1973.

Since the debut show in Paris in 1981, where the brand made a splash with its predominant use of black and distressed fabrics, Kawakubo has continued to push the boundaries of fashion as each generation knows it - with bubble fabrics, outsized shapes and destroyed looks often featuring prominently. The success of Comme des Garçons shows that the avant-garde can be wearable, and it is in demonstrating this that Kawakubo has become a pioneer of our time.
