As a remembrance from Roman Ankyra, Artemis held an important place in Ankara as one of Anatolia’s mother goddesses. Inscriptions reveal that Artemis — symbolizing earth and abundance — had an ancient cult in Ankara, and that during annual festivals held in her honour, the goddess’s ancient wooden cult statues were ceremonially taken to a lake in Ankara and washed. Combined with the symbol of Daphne, Artemis’s twin sister and a symbol of abundance and immortality, this piece is inspired by the collection of the Erimtan Archaeology and Art Museum.
