Dry cleaning silk garments isn’t always necessary, and most items are suitable for hand washing if done carefully. For silk garments suitable for washing, use a mild detergent that is designed for delicate fabrics and avoid using chlorine bleach as this can weaken and yellow the material. Choose a low-temperature spin cycle on the machine, or hand wash in water that is cool or tepid. Leave to soak for no more than five minutes, and rinse well. Press out any remaining water, and then let items dry naturally. Direct sunlight can yellow and weaken fibres, so always keep silk garments away from direct sunlight as they dry. If you need to clean in the machine, first place in a laundry bag, select a delicate, cold-water cycle and remove promptly once the cycle has finished to reduce wrinkles.
