Launching his eponymous label in 1971, Yohji Yamamoto is the influential Japanese designer based in Paris. Best known for his skill as a tailor, the designer often eschews traditional styles, favouring instead deconstructed silhouettes and avant-garde shapes that experiment with balance, volume and proportion through precise drapery in order to create something fresh. Favouring a masculine aesthetic in womenswear, functionality and ease of use remain key to his directional designs. His signature use of black highlights the clean lines and utilitarian feel of his collections, while flashes of graphic prints and pops of colour bring a playful edge.
