A Winter Wardrobe with Room to Play

There is a particular kind of menswear advice that suggests you can solve getting dressed by buying fifteen very sensible things in shades of navy, grey and beige. A good coat, some straight-leg trousers, a merino crew neck. Repeat until further notice. And while we're certainly not going to argue against a good coat, the problem with building a wardrobe entirely around versatility is that you can end up with a lot of clothes and absolutely nothing to say about them.
For winter 2026, think of the capsule wardrobe less as a strict list of essentials and more as a cast of characters. You need the reliable foundations, the layers that make getting dressed for freezing temperatures bearable, and the accessories that earn their place in daily rotation. But you also need a few things that exist for no particularly practical reason at all. The strange jumper. The excellent hat. The jacket that makes an otherwise unremarkable outfit worth leaving the house in.
Here's how to build a winter wardrobe that actually feels like yours.
