CHANEL

Best known for the 'little black dress', the perfume 'No. 5 de Chanel' and the iconic Chanel suit, the Chanel brand is a global powerhouse of fashion. Founded in 1909, the brand completely revolutionised both high fashion (haute couture) and everyday fashion. The label's pioneering use of jersey fabric to make clothing that were comfortable and affordable replaced the highly structured silhouettes that dominated women's fashion 'formed by wearing a corset and bodice 'with pieces that were both functional and flattering. During the 20s the simple, linear designs of Chanel couture offered a complete antithesis to the popular hourglass shapes of the late 19th century and incorporated typically masculine colours such as grey and navy blue with quilted fabric and leather trimmings. Signature Chanel looks which still endure today include the classic Chanel suit, two-toned pump shoes, necklaces of pearls and quilted-leather handbags.
