His debut collection launched in 1977, Yohji Yamamoto is the influential Parisian-based, Japanese designer. His collections can best be summed up as a work of contrasting and conflicting influences, blending directional and innovative styles with functional designs that are ultimately practical and easy to wear. Despite being a master tailor, Yamamoto constantly experiments with balance, proportion and volume, draping the fabric to create a new and avant-garde silhouette that often conceals, rather than emphasizes the figure. He often breaks up his signature black with shots of colour and graphic prints. The resulting clothing is consistently fresh, exciting and cutting edge.
