Italian designer Giorgio Armani founded his eponymous Armani label in 1975 after training as at atelier. His aim was to toughen up a woman's look and soften a man's, with lighter fabrics and less harsh cuts. The label was propelled into fashion fame after actor Richard Gere was dresses in Armani for the film American Gigolo and has since developed sister labels under the Armani name. Menswear now also offers up a range of accessories including sunglasses and lightweight scarves.
